The Scenic flight

Day 1
Kingfisher will collect you from your local accommodation for an early morning departure. After an extensive pre-flight briefing of the journey ahead, you will depart Kununurra Airport for a 1.5hr private aircraft flight to Mitchell Plateau. Enroute you will view the Ord River Diversion Dam and irrigated farmlands, and the spectacular Cockburn Ranges. Your journey continues across the vast expanse of the rarely visited Central Kimberley. We arrive at the natural bauxite rich airfield at Mitchell Plateau and head out by 4WD to the start of the 4.5km Punamii-unpuu Hiking Trail to the Mitchell Falls. Along the way there is ample opportunity to rest, paddle and explore the awesome Little Merton�s and Big Merton�s Falls and the ancient rock art sites featuring the extraordinary Gwion Gwion spirit figures.

Arriving at the spectacular Mitchell Falls at around midday, it is time to find the perfect picnic spot and enjoy the gourmet lunch prepared for you. You are free to wander and explore the escarpment and swim in the upstream (crocodile free) waterholes. We next rendezvous at the Mitchell Falls Helipad for an exhilarating chopper ride over the Falls back to Base and 4WD journey to the luxurious Mitchell Falls Wildreness Lodge. Take the opportunity to explore and enjoy the unique flora in the dappled afternoon sunlight or swim in the tranquil Camp Creek. After dinner, enjoy the quiet and convivial atmosphere of this very isolated retreat, before retiring to your very comfortable accommodation.

Day 2
Awakened by songbirds in the crisp clean air, enjoy an unhurried breakfast, before your Kingfisher Tours pilot and guide calls to transfer you to Mitchell Plateau airfield. Depart Mitchell Plateau and re-join Kingfisher�s Wandjina Explorer Tour flight to the coast and to your next stop. Enroute you will view Port Warrender and the Kimberley Coastal Camp, the rich pearl farms of Vansittart Bay, the WWII Truscott airbase, and miles of exotic and pristine coastline.

Arrive at the remote settlement of Kalumburu for a tour of the Mission and the Community, including the Art Centre and the historic WWII aircraft graveyard. A picnic brunch is served on the Mission lawns. After midday we depart Kalumburu for the remote Timor Sea coast, overflying Faraway Bay, King George Falls, Berkeley River, and the mighty Cambridge Gulf. At the mouth of the Ord River we track east following its meandering path and tidal floodplains where saltwater crocodiles are often seen soaking in the midday sun. You will pass by House Roof Hill, the very recognizable backdrop to Baz Luhman�s �Australia� movie.

The Ord River Irrigation Area and its expanding farmlands will then be revealed as we set course for the green and vibrant townsite of Kununurra. Arrive at Kununurra and transfer to accommodation.
