Day 1: Arrival Day, Hobart
• Welcome to Hobart, the capital of Tasmania. This charming city
offers a distinct blend of heritage, scenery and culture nestled
between its charming sandstone buildings and calm waterfront. If
you’re here on a Saturday, be sure to check out Salamanca Markets.
A walk along the waterfront also yields a great view of the mountains
clasping the River Derwent, and the nearby MONA is a must see for
any art aficionados. Later in the afternoon, meet with your guide
and fellow travellers for a brief run-down of the adventure ahead,
then perhaps opt to spend the evening sampling some of Hobart’s
incredibly fresh seafood over dinner with the group.
Meals Included There are no meals included on this day.
Special Information It’s very important that you attend the welcome
meeting as we will be collecting insurance details and next of kin
information at this time. If you are going to be late please let
your travel agent or hotel reception know. Ask reception or look
for a note in the lobby for more information on where the meeting
will take place.
Day 2: Thousand Lake Lodge
• Depart from Hobart this morning and take a leisurely drive to
Mt Field National Park, Tasmania’s first national park, and home
to an abundance of wildlife, diverse fauna and stunning lush vistas.
Walk in the land of the giants as you explore beautiful surrounds
on a guided walk through tremendous fern forests to Russell Falls
– the park’s star attraction that was featured on Australia’s first
stamp. This afternoon, continue your drive towards Tasmania’s Central
Plateau, passing through Hamilton and Bothwell, taking in some of
the stretching views of the Great Lake’s placid waters as you drive
up to your lodge for the night. Tonight’s stay lies at an incredible
lodge near Lake Augusta, surrounded by rugged shrubbery, tiny mires
and open highland scenery. Previously used as an arctic training
base, the accommodation features a charming fireplace, comfortable
leather couches and best of all, a larder stocked with delicious
local meats and cheeses for some particularly classy snacking options.
Meals Included •Breakfast •Dinner
Day 3: Lemonthyme Lodge
• Take a plunge through the Greater Western Tiers, heading down
into the Meander Valley. The local apiaries are responsible for
churning out delicious clover honey with light citrus and vanilla
flavours – take a sample of this sweet local treat before heading
to a wildlife sanctuary for a chance to visit the local Tasmanian
Devils (they’re not as fiendish as they sound!). Continue hiking
onwards to Tulampanga (Alum Cliffs), a place considered spiritually
important for the local Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander tribes
due to the ochre found in the surrounding ranges. Following the
trail forged by the trappers, hunters and loggers of old, stop for
a break at mural filled Sheffield before returning to the mountains
route to Cradle Valley, the gateway to Cradle Mountain National
Park. Once you arrive, either relax around the hotel or pause to
absorb the beautiful natural landscapes of this World Heritage-listed
area. Consider dropping into the Wilderness Gallery’s for the evocative
art, photographic and film exhibitions while you’re here.
Meals Included •Breakfast •Dinner
Day 4: Launceston
• Spend the morning exploring the magnificent wilderness of Cradle
Mountain National Park along a number of different walking tracks.
For those who prefer to travel at a leisurely pace, consider taking
a trip to Waldheim Chalet or wandering along the Dove Lake circuit.
For those with a little more grit, or people who simply love views
of gorgeous lakes with rugged mountain backdrops, the hike to Marion’s
Lookout is perfect. This afternoon, head down the mountain for a
visit to Ashgrove Farm to witness the production of some of Tasmania’s
most famous cheese. Take a nibble of this dairy-based delight before
continuing your journey to Launceston, Australia’s third oldest
city.
Meals Included •Breakfast
Day 5: St Helens
• After breakfast, experience the rugged, awning beauty of Cataract
Gorge – located on the edge of Launceston, the surrounding bushland
makes you feel as though you’re a million miles away from city life.
Explore this slice of wilderness, with its beautifully landscaped
gardens and panoramic lookouts, before continuing your journey to
the north-eastern coast of Tasmania, and the stunning Bay of Fires.
Spanning over 50 kilometres, this incredible stretch of coastal
heaven is made up of a collection of superb beaches, famous for
the fiery orange lichen that clings to the boulder-clad landscape.
This evening spend the night in the bustling town of St Helens,
renowned for its game-fishing and delicious oysters.
Meals Included •Breakfast •Dinner
Day 6: Hobart
• This morning, drive east to the beautiful Freycinet National Park,
home to a wild domain of sublime beaches, whose powder-white sands
are lapped by translucent waters. For those seeking a challenge,
try the climb to the summit of Mt Amos or join the walk to Wineglass
Bay, voted one of the world’s top 10 beaches. If time permits, stop
by Devils Corner winery to indulge in a tasting or two of their
award-winning wines then continue south, passing through the coastal
towns of Swansea and Orford, and the historic village of Richmond,
before arriving Hobart. This evening, perhaps join your fellow travellers
for a final dinner to toast to your Tasmanian travels.
